BUDAPEST

In 1873 Buda, Óbuda and Pest merged as Budapest and the city we know today was born. The capital city is the most populated in Hungary with 1.723.836 people in 2021. Most of the people are Hungarian – 91%, the next one is German and Slovakian people with 0,2 and 0,1 percent.

Budapest is divided to Buda in the west and Pest in the east by the river Danube. The two parts of the city has very different presence in the whole life of Budapest.

Pest has the majority of the population with 1.181.143 people (data from 2021.) and the landscape is mostly flat with the historical city centre, the parliament building in the bank of the Danube and many new residential areas in the city outskirt.

If you ask the locals, Pest is the “party zone” of the city with many tourists, famous clubs, and the party district in the heart of the city.

On the other side of the Danube is Buda, with high hills and the famous Buda castle overlooking Pest. If Pest is the party zone, then Buda is the place for families and friends to wind down and relax with many cultural institutes, green parks, and hiking trails.

Budapest is the city of universities in Hungary as well, with 21 universities and over 150.00 students living here. Many universities in the city pride themselves on the number of foreign students as well, form all around the world.
